Freddy’s Best Kills
(Spoilers for films in the Nightmare Before Elm Street franchise are below).
We’re ranking the best kills from the Nightmare on Elm Street franchise. This list doesn’t include the many times Freddy himself was killed, but rather all the people he killed. We tried to avoid some of the more comedic deaths, since those are pretty ridiculous, but a few of them have to make the cut. There are a lot of deaths here that were pretty imaginative, some were shockers, and some changed the way you look at certain ordinary objects.

10. A Nightmare on Elm Street (2010) – Jesse
I wasn’t the biggest fan of this remake, but the way Jesse dies is pretty sweet. It’s a decent homage to the boiler room nightmare scenes and the jail scene death from the first movie, but what really makes it stand out is that last line of dialogue uttered by Freddy. That can really allow your imagination to run wild.

9. A Nightmare on Elm Street 5: The Dream Child – Dan
Ridiculous … definitely. But this one’s a lot of fun. Especially since I didn’t care for Dan as a character in either of the Nightmare movies he was in. He gets an explosive death – one that Michael Bay certainly would have been proud of.

8. A Nightmare on Elm Street 5: The Dream Child – Mark
In a mostly entertaining parody of superheroes and comics, Mark gets sucked into a battle with Freddy through his comic book. After Mark turns into a superhero of his own creation, he discovers the hard way that you can’t shoot Freddy. Unfortunately Freddy has a secret vigilante identity of his own, Super Freddy, whom Mark is literally cut into dozens of tiny pieces by.

7. A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors – Jennifer
This death may have signaled the beginning of a more comedic Freddy, but it’s still a good one. Before succumbing to her nightmares, Jennifer is ridiculed for her real-life dream of being a Hollywood starlet, which makes this death and punchline all the more entertaining.

6. Wes Craven’s New Nightmare – Julie
This is a nice homage to Tina’s death from the first movie, but it’s just different enough to give the scene its own little flavor. The fact that we see Freddy physically drag Julie up the side of the wall and on to the ceiling, all in front of a young child, makes for a pretty intense horror scene.

5. A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors – Nancy
It’s not so much a great death as it’s a shocking death. Nancy is Freddy’s arch-nemesis. After it appears Freddy is defeated at the end of this movie, he pops back up one final time to deliver a fatal blow to the woman that’s been portrayed as this franchise’s most important protagonist.

4. A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors – Philip
There’s something about having the tendons being cut out of your arms and legs that looks very painful. The fact that Philip not only has this happen to him but he’s danced around like a marionette for a full two and half minutes makes this look like an agonizing form of torture. It’s a horror death that stays with you.

3. A Nightmare on Elm Street – Glen
The bloodiest death in the whole franchise, at least if you’re measuring blood flow by volume. Glen gets sucked into his bed, and comes out exsanguinated. The fact that the role is portrayed by Johnny Depp, well before he became an A-lister, makes it all the more sweet.

2. A Nightmare on Elm Street – Tina
Freddy’s first kill is epic. It’s that moment where you realize that when he kills you in your nightmare, you’re actually dead. That is truly a terrifying concept to wrap your mind around the first time you see it happen. This death has become so iconic that it was recreated in two of the other Nightmare movies, but nothing beats the original.

1. A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master – Debbie
This death may be a bit silly, at least that’s the direction it starts to go once Debbie starts to turn into a cockroach, but this scene will definitely change the way you look at a bench-press. Prior to this death, Debbie is seen talking trash about kicking Freddy’s ass to Alice … oh how wrong she was.
