My Enemy

(Spoilers for the previous Resident Evil books below).

Resident Evil: Nemesis is a better entry in the series than the botched attempt at an original story that was it’s predecessor. The most notable part of this book is the main villain (no, not the Nemesis creature) who is beautifully written and fully fleshed out. However, the two main characters leave a lot to be desired and the overall plot is pretty weak and plays out just like a game would.

Welcome to the Literary Underworld

(Spoilers for the previous Resident Evil books are below).

Resident Evil: Underworld is S.D. Perry’s sophomore attempt at writing an original novel set in the Resident Evil universe, and a slightly better book than her other original, Caliban Cove. The book is not without it’s flaws however, as the plot is paper thin and the book delivers very little of the answers that it promises.

We Built This City…

Resident Evil: City of the Dead is certainly better than Caliban Cove, but it’s still not as effective as The Umbrella Conspiracy. The book switches between too many characters too often, which leaves the main characters little room to develop. Perry certainly loves the series, which is great if you’re a hardcore fan, but won’t mean much if you aren’t.

(This review contains spoilers for Resident Evil (PSX/ GC) as well as Resident Evil: The Umbrella Conspiracy).

S.D. Perry’s second book in her Resident Evil series, Caliban Cove, has all the makings of an action movie and almost nothing to do with what Resident Evil fans would recognize. The plot and characters are quite thin, but it’s worth a read if you’re dead set on finding out what happens to Rebecca Chambers between Resident Evil and Resident Evil 2.

Evil at Home

Book one in S.D. Perry’s Resident Evil series, The Umbrella Conspiracy, is a light, quick read. What it lacks in substance it more than makes up for with gruesome action and loving recreations of memorable scenes from the first game. If you’re a fan of the games this is probably right up your alley, if not this probably won’t convert you.
