Sky is a limited release low budget film that depicts a Nazi invasion
of Earth that is launched from the moon… yes that’s really what this
movie is about.
This film’s attempts to blend ridiculous humor with clever meaningful statements (none of which are portrayed in a meaningful way) fails miserably at nearly every venture to make this film feel relevant.
It’s not funny. It’s not entertaining. It’s not serious. It’s not well acted. It’s not written well. The only “it is” about this film is … it is awful. Iron Sky is one of the worst film’s I’ve seen in a long time.
As World War II was coming to an end, a secret Nazi space program launched survivors to the moon. Fast-forwarding to 2018 an American astronaut landing on the moon discovers a vibrant Nazi colony there that is planning to avenge the Nazi loss in World War II.
Iron Sky is one of those film’s with a plot that’s so bad, you know the filmmakers had set out to make a film that was meant to be entertaining via how bad the plot was. These purposefully bad, but entertaining films, can be a lot of fun to watch, and Iron Sky looks to try being one of those – it even has a plot that should succeed in making this type of film. The problem is, Iron Sky fails to be entertaining in any way.
This film fails in its attempts to be satirical. For example, the U.S. President (Stephanie Paul) is an obvious parody of Sarah Palin. Sarah Palin is a polarizing figure who’s been a great source of material for comedians ever since she joined the McCain Presidential ticket in 2008 … and this film can’t manage any funny jokes, situations, or any form of humor with this character. I mean none.
How do you not manage to not create a single funny scene parodying a woman who once claimed that seeing Russia from Alaska gives her the foreign policy experience required to be a country’s leader? Watching the real Sarah Palin is more entertaining than watching this poorly acted and unfunny impersonation.
The American astronaut James Washington (Christopher Kirby) that lands on the moon and is forced to confront the Nazi’s is black. The film attempts to show the misguided views the Nazi’s have about race as they try to figure out how to deal with a black person in their colony. Once again the film fails to make the socially relevant points they were hoping to make, and instead they make for some genuinely uncomfortable scenes.
The acting in this film is terrible. The leads don’t sell you on their poorly written characters, as they add no sentiment or any comedic value to them. As bad as the leads are, the character Vivian Wagner (Peta Sergeant) is the standout worst. She has one mode of acting: slutty, greedy, bitch, and she can’t even pull that off. Her character in the film is insulting to women who acquire or desire positions of leadership.
The only clever thing about this film that works is the extensive references to German composer, known anti-Semite, and pre-Nazi role model Richard Wagner. Wagner who was a great composer, but a horribly misguided human being, has his operas frequently referenced throughout the film, and his music is also frequently played in the background. Normally I would say this a bastardization of a great composer’s music, but because Wagner was such a bastard in reality, it’s only fitting that he should suffer the punishment of having his music getting disgraced in this film.
Iron Sky fails to makes it’s B-list science fiction plot entertaining in anyway. It was an idea that had potential for those types of movies, but it is completely wasted. Do not see this movie unless you’re looking to see what failure looks like in a visual medium.
